This is the plain, boring sales page for a new, private, paid group I’m testing called:
And, partly because it’s so cheap …
And also partly because I don’t want to “hype” anyone into buying this:
The below sales page is formatted entirely as a plain old Q&A section.
Let’s see how good I am at predicting what you want to know …
“The heck is a ‘CopyJunto’?”
Why is that your first question?!?
Well, the Junto was a group set up by Benjamin Franklin in 1727 as a gathering of intelligent friends who discussed intellectual ideas for mutual improvement.
My CopyJunto is a proposed spin on that … sorta.
I’m not gonna pretend this group will be anything near that noble or edifying. It’s a glorified social media feed. But I always loved the concept of Franklin’s Junto, so in honour of it, I stole his name for it.
“Okay, so what’s your ‘CopyJunto’ then?”
It’s a social media group/platform for me to share my private thoughts on copywriting, business and anything else I want to talk about.
My vision is for the CopyJunto to be a cross between:
a) a “copywriting group” where my best readers & customers can chat/network with me and each other; and
b) a paid Patreon-style page, where you pay a monthly fee to get a private “behind-the-scenes” feed from me, with extra stuff about my biz & personal life.
“Who would want to join a group like that?”
Well, if you’re a big fan of my brand and what I do, I guess it would be interesting to you.
Look, we’re both copywriters, so I’m just gonna be straight with you: the main ‘value prop’ here is the ability to learn from me & network with me for a few bucks a month.
I know that if any of the copywriters I admired had had something like this when I was growing my career, I’d have been all over it.
But, to put it another way:
- If you love my emails (especially the longer ones where I get really in-depth, or opinionated, or personal, or I pick fights with trolls or other people), then it may be for you.
- If you are just on my list to ‘learn copywriting’, or because I am just one of those ‘recommended email lists’ you joined, it’s probably not.
- If you think I’m a cool/interesting/funny guy, it may be for you.
- If you think I’m arrogant or a jerk, it’s probably not.
“I thought you hated social media?”
And accordingly, this is an experiment of sorts. I may kill it on a whim if I don’t like its effect on my mind or ego.
Besides, I still don’t have any other forms of social media. This will be the only one.
“Soooo … why are you making a group like this?”
Because I’ve come to realise that while I am an introvert, I find myself always having business-related thoughts I want to share and discuss with intelligent, like-minded copywriting friends. Either ideas, or insights, or sometimes I just get the DUMBEST emails and I need to show someone but I’ve already sent enough ‘troll’ stuff to my list that week.
My friends and family are getting kinda sick of me texting these things to them. So expanding to a ‘core’ group of my best readers/fans/customers is a logical way of providing this ‘outlet’ for me.
“What will you talk about?”
Well, copywriting, of course.
But likely also a lot of other non-copywriting things that form my wide range of interests: marketing … theology … philosophy … politics … parenting … nutrition … fitness … logic … mathematics … science … music … engineering … languages … investing … personal finance … and, well, whatever else my mind feels like at the time.
It goes without saying that if I offend you in my emails, you will be MORE offended by the less-filtered things I may say here. For your own sake, I would recommend you don’t participate in this.
A little sampling to show you
what it’s like:
“Wait, that doesn’t look like Facebook. Where is this group?”
No. I loathe Facebook. The CopyJunto is hosted on the SocialLair platform created by Troy Broussard and Ben Settle. Yes, that’s another hurdle to entry, but I’m fine with that.
“Hmm. What’s in it for me though? Like what will I actually get out of joining?”
Well, if you are not already interested by what you have already seen above, I honestly don’t recommend you join. I REALLY don’t want to razzle anyone into joining this. They’ll be disappointed.
That said, here is what you can possibly expect (no guarantees on anything though):
- Private access to me (not mentorship-level Q&A access, but still, more than the masses get)
- More uncensored thoughts than I share in my emails (so if you get offended at stuff I say in my emails, you shouldn’t join, because I will likely be WORSE in here)
- More updates on my actual personal life than I share in my emails
- Member-only AMAs (at specified times, not always)
- Behind-the-scenes info on decisions I make in my business
- Mocking the “secret trolls” and dumb messages I get that don’t make it into my emails
- Opportunities to beta test and have input on new products
Also, a little hint for those readers who have taken my course Email Celebrity:
This is a fantastic opportunity for you to exercise “upward networking”.
I am NOT trying to hard-sell anyone on joining this. In fact, I want to talk most people out of it. But there are certainly some influential copywriting/business figures who, if they had a group like this at this price point, I would have joined in a heartbeat to be able to chat to them and learn more from (and about) them.
“Will I get to ask you Q&As on copywriting if I join?”
No. This is not a mentorship program, nor is it a cheap substitute for consulting. So don’t join for that.
I mean, it’s not like questions are banned or anything like that. If I post something and you have a question, feel free to ask (though I am not promising replies to everything). But I don’t want you joining in the hopes of being able to run your copy past me, or ask for tips on getting clients, or have me take a quick look at why your emails aren’t converting.
“Is joining going to make me a better copywriter?”
At least, not in any meaningful way.
I’m not even going to pretend there are “secret copywriting lessons” embedded in “how I run a social media group” or something.
I mean, I probably will give copywriting tips and insights. But I wouldn’t subscribe for that. It’s really just about me having an outlet.
“So … why would you charge for this then? I can follow other copywriters for FREE on their socials…!”
Yup. But I won’t be doing it that way.
Firstly, it makes money. Like, this is NOT a profit play for me, given how little I expect it to make … but I never saw a $20 bill I didn’t like, y’know? (Okay, okay, I’m kidding … mostly)
Secondly, it adds a barrier to entry. I don’t want to go on a place like Instagram and share pictures of my life with a group of random people I have never met, and who can stalk me without revealing their identity in turn. Adding a paid component adds a barrier to this that helps keep the creeps, trolls and low-quality weirdos out.
Thirdly, it shows me who my most qualified customers and fans are. That’s a useful thing for any business. And accordingly, I can go on to treat them better, give them better deals, share things with them I wouldn’t share with others, etc.
A final note on this:
I was obviously joking about this thing making me money, but in case it wasn’t clear: I always do everything with my customers in mind. I don’t charge people more than the value I think they will realistically get. Even something like this, which is not about giving “value”, I wouldn’t accept money if I didn’t feel it would be worth it for some people.
Then again, if you don’t already know that about me, you probably don’t know me well enough to be a good fit for this yet.
“How much does it cost?”
For now … $9/month.
I have plans to keep raising that so it rewards people who were in earlier.
“Can I cancel any time?”
Of course. Just email me at my usual email address.
“Can I get a refund too if I cancel?”
If you are actually asking this, email me and ask directly so I can ban you from my list.
“Are there any other rules on joining?”
Yes — a few commonsense things like:
- You must sign up with your real identity that I can verify — I want to trust the people in this group
- You agree not to share anything in the group outside of the group — and I don’t mean just ‘legally’ agree, but you actually pledge your word as an honourable person
- You will need a mobile number to verify your signup
Oh, and …
I get the final say over pretty much everything.
That includes the right to reject your application to join (like, say, if you are a competitor, or someone who hates me, or someone who has unsubscribed from my emails, etc.)
Or the right to kick out people who are annoying, spies, trolls, or who for some reason I decide I should never have let in in the first place.
Or anything else, really.
Still wanna join?
I’m not expecting a lot of people to be interested in this … but I’m pretty sure the few I can think of who I think will join are going to enjoy it.
This should be fun.
