Yeah … right.
Everyone thinks all they need to learn is sales pages. (Or emails.)
If you feel like a faker who’s making this “freelance copywriting” thing all up as you go along … odds are, it’s because your market research process sucks.
Seriously. If you’re not feeling confident when you hand your copy in …
It means … you didn’t do the right research for the job.
It means … you didn’t find out what your client really wanted* before you started writing.
(*Yes, there are ways to find this out, down to the very FONT SIZE they secretly prefer your draft to have. And no, it is not as simple as “just ask them” or “always use size 18” — I show you how to actually do it in Market Detective)
It means … you don’t actually know if your copy will resonate with the target audience.
And it means … you might even have said something the market would never say, and your client will realise you have NO IDEA what you’re talking about.
So, forget buying yet another ‘sales page’ course.

You tell me how this sounds, okay?
So you get a new copywriting job.
If you’re like most copywriters here’s what you do…
You start with those things everyone says you “should” do, like …
- Reddit. That’s a good place to start, right? You go to Reddit and search … but there’s no subreddit for this market. Hm. So much for that suggestion.
- Next you try Amazon. But … the thing you’re selling doesn’t even exist on Amazon. Instead, your search just brings up a list of Chinese gadgets. Oops.
- Okay … what about Quora? Everyone says Quora. But … Quora proves to be as helpful as a punch in the eye. It’s just a bunch of answers. Who even said this was a good idea?
- You’re getting a bit desperate. Forums? That’d be great! You Google for forums … and … don’t find any.
Sigh. Somehow, it’s not as easy as that other copywriting course made it look.
And that’s not to mention
organising your research document…
You have a vague idea that you’re meant to look for things like “desires”, “pains”, “fears”, “failures” and so on.
But when you start writing stuff down, you find that things don’t fit that neatly.
So you end up putting most of your stuff into a messy ‘uncategorised’ pile instead.
And your research document blows up … till it’s bloated and useless.
Oh, and you’ve heard people say you’re supposed to “call” people…
… but you have no idea how you’d even do that.
And let’s be honest:
You don’t WANT to have to call some randoms!!!
Really? All you want is something you can do from behind your laptop, WITHOUT having to talk to someone or rely on your client sending out questionnaires.
And then there’s the biggest question of all …
“When can I stop researching?!?”
You stare at a wall of text, and wonder which part you’re supposed to take…
So you just take it all! 🤷♂️
You keep accumulating more and more, never sure if you’ve actually got “enough”, or when you can stop.
And when you DO stop, and start writing your copy …
You’re not sure if your client’s going to like it.
Because you didn’t actually find out HOW to know what they like.
No wonder you feel like a fraud.
And no wonder every time you submit copy …
… you fear the nightmare of the “Please Explain” email from your client.
Don’t worry though! There are plenty of ‘market research’ modules in copywriting courses, full of HELPFUL (🙄) tips like:
- You can NEVER do enough market research. Go deep … deeper … DEEPER!!! Know the books they read. Know the movies they watch. Call them … date them … stalk them … kill them and wear their skin. THAT’S the secret to copy that CoNvErTs!!!
- What? No, it doesn’t matter if this is a job you are only getting paid $40 for on Upwork. You must still do 30 hours of research. DEEEEEEPEERRRRRR!!!
- PiCk Up ThE pHoNe!!! Speaking of going deeper. You have to actually TALK to people, don’t you know?!? Who cares if you’re an introvert? Get dialling!
- Do surveys.
- Don’t do surveys. People lie in them and they suck. (Pick up the phone instead.)
- And yeah, just basically use Google, Reddit, Amazon, Quora, Twitter, Facebook groups, SEMRush, forums, Tik Tok, Instagram, AHRefs, Facebook analytics, Google Trends, customer service emails, AnswerThePublic, and interview the company’s CEO, product designer, head of marketing, junior accountant, and the janitor. As well as calling customers AND reading all the books they read.
Oh hey I was gonna explain HOW and WHEN to do all this stuff but I ran out of time in my module so just do it all or figure it out yourself or something lol kthxbye

“What kinds of copy is this course for?”
Unlike most courses, which are biased towards writing ONE certain kind of copy (like long-form sales pages for supplements, or sales letters for info-products), Market Detective is more copy-agnostic.
I’ve used this process for sales pages, landing pages, homepages and email funnels.
And I’ve used it in many different industries like investing, personal finance, blogging, self-development, supplements, starting a business, physical products, and many more.
“Will it work for me if I’m not a copywriter? As in, I’m a marketer, or a business owner writing my own copy, or an agency owner.”
Yes, you’ll learn something. A lot of the training in this course on what research to do is helpful to anyone trying to understand their customers.
But be warned that my five-stage system for how much research to do is designed ONLY for freelance copywriters. Non-copywriters might not find this part useful — or in some cases, be actively repulsed by it (as you will see).
Frankly, if you’re not a copywriter, you will have to decide whether it is worth it for your situation.
“What about AI? Do you talk about how to use AI for research?”
No. I made this course in 2020, before the advent of AI.
However, even today, my view is that the “old-school” techniques I teach in Market Detective are MUCH more valuable than “pretending” to do research by talking to an AI.
Here’s why (warning, this might get long):
Yes, AI is brilliant for doing what I call “product research” — quickly becoming an expert in the field you’re writing for.
You can sit there and ask ChatGPT questions about any topic, product, or industry, and it’ll patiently answer all your questions and give you all the detail you want. It’s great for that. And certainly much faster than figuring it out yourself with books and Google searches.
But … I am not going to be adding a module to Market Detective on how to do this.
And that is for a simple reason:
CHATGPT IS LITERALLY A CHATBOT WHOSE ENTIRE PURPOSE IS TO SPEAK TO YOU CONVERSATIONALLY LIKE A PERSON.
THE ONLY THING YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW TO DO IS TAKE YOUR QUESTIONS…
…AND TYPE THEM INTO A CHAT.
IF YOU NEED TO BUY A COURSE TO LEARN HOW TO TYPE QUESTIONS INTO A CHAT?
YOU HAVE BIGGER PROBLEMS THAN I CAN HELP YOU WITH.
So, yeah. I really don’t feel the need to add a module into Market Detective on how to ask questions of ChatGPT because if you can’t figure that out, respectfully, you are retarded.
But by all means. Use it for that part of your market research. It’s great for that. Power to the robots!
Where most people are MISTAKEN about AI’s ability to “save time” is in the other half of your research, which actually deals with the people in your market … i.e. the half I actually call “market research”.
I have heard copywriters raving about being able to take 2000 survey results … and let the AI summarise them in 30 seconds.
Or using the AI to act as a proxy for their market — i.e. telling it “imagine you are a <market avatar>” — and then grilling it with the questions you’d ask a real person.
The problem is, both of these are, oh — what’s the technical term again? — oh, right:
If you are working on a project where crunching extensive survey data makes sense (AND IT DOES NOT ALWAYS — THIS IS, LIKE, THE CORE PREMISE OF MARKET DETECTIVE) then you should NOT be letting an AI interpose between you and your data. You need to roll up your sleeves … shove your hands into the data … and let it trickle over your fingers as you sort amongst the red herrings and self-deception, looking for gold.
AI will not do that.
AI uses the words … but the true gold in market research comes from understanding what is behind the words … and when sometimes the words say the opposite of what they mean.
(I have a lesson in Market Detective where I take a Reddit comment and show you how it means the EXACT OPPOSITE of what it says — and immediately spin it into an email that preys on the huge, screaming emotional vulnerability exposed. I fed this same Reddit post into GPT-4 with all the necessary context and asked it to analyse the post. It fell for the trap and took the post at face value — a huge mistake.)
Even using AI as a ‘first pass’ to summarise a survey before you look for yourself can screw things up for you, because it ‘breaks’ the inbuilt feedback mechanism you should be using to know when you’ve done ENOUGH research (I have a simple ‘test’ for this which I teach in Market Detective, but which gets messed up if you get the answers BEFORE sifting through the data yourself).
As for letting AI act as a proxy for your market…
(Where you tell the AI to pretend it’s your customer avatar, then ask it to answer questions, write diary entries, list its pain points etc…)
This is one of those shortcuts that genuinely IS too good to be true.
The AI is trained on the face value of words it’s read on the internet … but those are NOT always right, or accurate. And yet because it so convincingly acts human, most marketers are fooled into forgetting that it’s not actually their market, but a mere imitation of what the algorithm thinks the market is like.
I’ve personally tested this in the copywriting market, a market in which I am one of the best in the world at selling to. Ask AI what the pain points of copywriters are and it’ll give you stuff that seems right — but it never hits the true drivers of what makes them buy, such as the crippling fear that a client is going to take your copy and throw it back in your face and call you an impostor. (And oh, would you look at that — that’s the angle that I happened to use for the lead of this sales page…) Yet this is something you’d never know if all you relied on was your AI avatar!!!
Point is … you CANNOT talk to an AI pretending to be your avatar and assume it’s as good as talking to a real person. PERIOD.
“B-b-but I don’t want to talk to real people,” you protest. “I want to talk to a chatbot! It’s safe and friendly for an introvert like me!”
I DON’T LIKE TALKING TO PEOPLE EITHER!
I HATE PEOPLE! I HATE THEM ALL! I EVEN HATE YOU!
But that’s the point…
YOU DON’T ALWAYS NEED TO TALK TO PEOPLE.
Again, that’s what Market Detective is about. There is a reason my ingenious “staged” approach has you approaching the project in sequential ‘levels’. And there is a reason my “introverted research” level comes BEFORE the “speak to the market” level. There is logic to all of this.
Just … don’t talk to an AI and pretend that counts for talking to a real person. Because it doesn’t.
Use it for facts, figures, data, analogies, edits, turns of phrase, and even blocks of copy if you want.
But when it comes to dealing with the human element of your market…
Don’t let an AI get between you and the data.
If saving time on your research, even at the cost of accuracy, is your goal … I believe there are better ways of doing that. And I show you those in Market Detective.
But if I were researching a new market … I would never let an AI taint my raw data. I know from long personal experience that nothing has ever beaten sitting there in a spreadsheet of my survey results and sifting through them, letting it all wash over me, feeling the frequency of how often certain things come up, noticing patterns, and picking up far more than I could have gotten from relying on some AI-generated summary. (In fact, Market Detective contains a couple hours’ worth of video of me doing exactly this, and showing how I used it to write the Market Detective sales page itself!)
And that’s why I still haven’t bothered including any special “AI modules” on doing research. I still stand by my process as the way I’d do it now … despite the deceptive allure of “time-saving” AI tools.

No. I hate payment plans. They don’t make you value what you paid for.

All the videos can be watched on 1.5x speed (recommended, it’s not too fast and saves you time).
The ‘core training’ can be finished in about 5-6 hours at this speed, and the whole course is about 12 hours.
“Is there a desktop version of this course?”
Yes, as of 2023, there is now desktop access available via your web browser, though you will need to set up access via the mobile app first.
“Can my phone/OS run the app?”
If you do not have my Persuasive Page app already, you should not be reading this sales letter. Use the link at the bottom of any of my emails to download and install the app and see for yourself.
“I still feel doubtful. Can you give me some more testimonials to scroll through before you finish this sales page?”
That … sounded suspiciously like a fake question.
(I’m beginning to have my doubts about who’s actually asking these…)
